In 1980 Liverpool, Mike Score formed A Flock Of Seagulls, named after the Stranglers song “Toiler on the Sea”. Score, his brother Ali (drums), and fellow hairdresser Frank Maudsley (bass), completed their eponymous debut album in 1982 and instantly vaulted themselves to the forefront of American culture with the seminal hit “I Ran (So Far Away)” which saw heavy play on MTV, a product their sonically multi-layered sounds and dramatic and unusual appearance. Perceived, perhaps unfairly as a one-hit wonder, the band had several hits such as "Space Age Love Song," "Telecommunication," and "Modern Love Is Automatic” and is one of few bands to successfully execute a concept album, their debut, which alludes to an alien invasion of earth. The band was featured on Viacom's VH1 and Sony's BMG Legacy Recordings' 2006 revival CD series and multi-platform marketing campaign, "We Are the '80s" and in 1983 took home a Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance for “D.N.A.” The coiffeur tandem’s distinct hairstyles, over time have created an enduring legacy, so much so that the band’s name made its way into the dialogue of the iconic film Pulp Fiction.
