Are you passionate about live music, community engagement, and sound financial stewardship? Peterborough Musicfest (PMF), a pillar of the arts and culture scene in Peterborough since 1987, is seeking a Treasurer to join our Board of Directors. This volunteer role is vital to ensuring the continued success and financial stability of one of Canada’s premier free-admission music festivals.

About the Role: Treasurer

Accountability

As an executive, voting member of PMF’s board, the Treasurer plays a critical governance role, offering fiscal oversight, guidance, and support to the organization. The Treasurer is accountable to the board and will work closely with the Board Chair, Vice Chair, Executive Director, and General Manager.

Time Commitment

  • Approximately 20 hours per year plus a minimum of 5 nights in the summer during concert season.
  • Includes board meetings, executive and committee meetings, and backstage sponsor support during summer events.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Financial Oversight:
    • Guide the development and review of high-level financial policies.
    • Collaborate with the Executive Director to prepare and present the annual budget.
    • Monitor fund allocation and ensure the organization’s financial books and records are accurate and up-to-date.
    • Present financial statements to the board and provide insights into performance.
  • Governance and Compliance:
    • Ensure government-required reports, such as the Charitable Information Return, are submitted on time.
    • Meet with the external auditor to review financial controls and recommend improvements.
    • Recommend auditing service renewals and present the financial report at the Annual General Meeting.
  • Strategic and Operational Input:
    • Serve as a co-signor for cheques and online payment approvals.
    • Oversee investment of funds and reserves.
    • Keep the board informed of key financial trends and issues.
  • Committee Membership:
    • Act as a member of the Executive Committee, meeting monthly with key leadership.

Qualifications

  • CPA designation (or equivalent) preferred.
  • 3+ years of public practice audit experience, preferably with non-profits.
  • Expertise in assurance, accounting, HST, and charity returns.
  • Strong commitment to excellence, attention to detail, and problem-solving.
  • Proficiency in MS Office, QuickBooks, and adaptability to new technologies.
  • Previous non-profit experience is an asset.
  • A passion for PMF’s mission and ability to contribute to its strategic direction.
